Surge al principio como un zumo de frutas que los esclavos brasileños mezclaban con cachaça, para tomar en ciertas festividades.

La bebida más popular era la que estaba mezclada con lima, pero sin incluir trozos de la fruta con cascara en ella.

Más adelante se fueron haciendo versiones con distintos ingredientes hasta evolucionar a la receta actual.

En el 2003 el gobierno de Lula la instituyó bebida típica oficial de Brasil
